The migration of the walleye on Lake Erie begins in mid March when they migrate towards their spawning areas that can be one of several in the Western Basin of Lake Erie. One is the Maumee River, another are the reefs on the south shore of Lake Erie and the third is the area between the Toledo Lighthouse and Turtle Island where dredging humps are located.
The spawning period starts around April 1st and goes until May 15th; depending on water temperatures.
During that period, hundreds of thousands of walleye end their migration in this area and these are the fish that Legal Limit Charters target in the spring using Jig Fishing.
The cold water and the aggressiveness of the spawn fish make this the most exciting walleye fishing of the year!
After the spring spawn is over, the walleye disperse throughout the Western Basin of Lake Erie. They then become more aggressive eaters so we switch our program to casting with live bait or trolling with spoons or crank-baits that have the movements of live bait. These two methods are very effective throughout the late spring and summer months.
